【2015-Archive】Ken Ishii

DJ

Pioneering producer, world-renowned DJ and true Nippon national treasure, Ken Ishii needs no introduction. With no more than a demo and a string of 12″es under his belt, the Japanese techno originator played his firstever live set in front of more than 20,000 people right after debuting on groundbreaking Belgian R&S Records label in 1993.

During the nineties he expanded his reputation as Japan’s top name in techno, headlining club tours and festivals worldwide, and producing under various monikers such as FLR, Flare and UTU. However, as the life of a techno DJ can become pretty lonesome, Ken hooked up with a number of Japan’s best known artists from various fields, such as DJ Yama for their Reel Up parties, or ‘Akira’ animation director Koji Marimoto, who illustrated Ken’s classic video ‘Extra’.

A first-hand witness of techno’s transformation from its early underground existence to the defining cultural movement of the late 20th century, Ken himself gained widespread recognition by producing the offical anthem for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, glancing from the cover of Newsweek, or conducting the sound design of Japan’s 2002 World Expo pavilion. Apparently, consistency and pioneering spirit are only two of many virtues one can learn from this true hero in the vast field of 4/4 electronic music.
