KAORI WAKAMATSU began her career as an illustrator in 2002.
Her art can be found on a variety of goods, including postcards, calendars, and book covers. Her illustrations have been recognized for their delicate and stylized quality, as well as an innovative use of patterns. She uses both analogue and digital tools uniquely, effectively conveying a vivacity that appeals to the youth of the digital generation, while also incorporating delicate and skillful details.
Kaori’s core fan base is young women in their teens through their twenties, but she has also successfully gained widespread appreciation in Japan and from those interested in Japanese pop art around the world. She says, “When illustrating characters, I try to put the atmosphere and the world around the person into the picture.” Her outstanding works include character design for popular social game “Brilliant Thieves Royale (Kaito Royale).” Her bold and stylish characters propelled the game into popularity, attracting over 10 million players and prompted the game to later be turned into a TV series. In 2014, Kinokuniya bookstores in San Francisco and Seattle introduced her design on their loyalty cards.
Kaori has designed cover illustrations for a hundred books of diverse genres, including historical novels, detective stories, and youth fiction. Her recognizable illustrations attract young readers. Kaori’s published works include illustration collections such as “Kaori Wakamatsu Art Book” (2011), “Kaori Wakamatsu Card Book” (2012), “One RAINY DAY scenes of a sprinkle” (2014), and “Kaori Wakamatsu Cover Art Illustrations” (2016). She has also designed covers for popular books including “TimeRiders” by Alex Scarrow (Japanese version) and “Hikari To Yami No Tabibito Seriese” by Atsuko Asano.
